New computer setup in Brisbane

A new computer is more useful when it has your familiar files, email and printer ready to go. Australian Computer Doctors visits Brisbane homes and small businesses to bring those everyday pieces together on a new Windows PC or Mac.

We start with what you need to keep using, including older programs and connected equipment. Tell us whether the old computer works and what you have already set up. We can then discuss the work, pricing and a suitable appointment.

Keep the things you need when changing computers

Photos may be on an external drive, documents in several folders and email partly stored on the old computer. We help establish where the important information is before planning its move. Applications and subscriptions need checking separately because copying a folder does not install a program.

The appointment can include making the new computer comfortable to use, testing email and printing, and arranging a backup. If you are moving between Windows and Mac, we explain which parts of your routine may change and what needs a different application.

  • Complete initial setup and discuss user account settings.
  • Transfer suitable photos, documents and other files.
  • Install compatible applications using your valid licences.
  • Connect your Wi-Fi, printer, screens and accessories.
  • Configure email and check sending and receiving.
  • Set up a practical backup and explain where your files are saved.

  • Keep the old computer, its charger and any backup drives.
  • Write down the programs and folders you want to keep.
  • Mention any fault that prevents access to the old device.
  • Have your printer and other everyday equipment ready.

Common questions

Can you finish setting up a computer I have already started?

Yes. Explain what you have completed and what remains, such as transferring files, connecting the printer or adding email. We can work from the existing setup and discuss any settings that need attention.

Will everything transfer exactly as it was?

Not always. Files, applications, subscriptions and settings have different transfer requirements. We discuss the items that matter and check compatibility; some programs need reinstalling or a suitable replacement.

Can you move information from an old Mac backup?

A suitable Time Machine backup may provide a way to transfer information to another Mac. Tell us about the backup and the old and new models so we can discuss the appropriate method and any limitations.

Should I give away the old computer straight away?

Wait until you have checked the transferred information and any backup. You can also ask about preparing the old device for its next owner once the move is complete.

How is the cost of this service worked out?

Our minimum labour time is one hour per job, and many jobs only need that hour. If more time is needed, we bill in 15 minute blocks. We do not charge call-out fees or travel costs. For onsite work, the time starts when your technician arrives. Parts cost extra if needed. The total depends on the fault and the work required, so we can give a more accurate estimate after diagnosis. Call us on 1300 199 074 to discuss pricing, or use our repair estimate form to send the details.

How much time should I allow?

Many jobs take around an hour, which is our minimum labour time per job. If extra time is needed, we bill in 15 minute blocks. After diagnosing the issue, your technician can give a more accurate time estimate and explain the options, taking the work needed and your budget into account. Some repairs need parts or work offsite, which can affect the time before the computer is ready.
