7 Tips to Manage Storage and Reduce Slowdowns

Manage computer storage with careful file reviews, suitable cloud settings, external backups and sensible application cleanup.

A nearly full drive can make it harder to use and update a computer. These seven tips can help you review storage without losing files you still need.

1. Review files before deleting them

Start with familiar locations such as Downloads and old personal folders. Make sure important files are backed up before removing them. Do not delete system folders or files you do not understand just to create space.

2. Understand cloud storage settings

Some cloud services can keep files online while reducing local storage use. Check how that feature works before changing settings. Deleting a synchronised file may also delete it from other devices or the cloud.

3. Use external storage thoughtfully

Moving large media files to an external drive can free local space. Check that the transfer is complete and keep an additional backup of important material. A file stored only on one external drive still has a single point of failure.

4. Uninstall applications you no longer need

Review installed programs using the operating system’s normal removal tools. Check that you no longer need the application or its data first. Removing an unused program may free space, but will not fix every cause of a slow computer.

5. Review browser data when appropriate

Browser caches can use space, but clearing them is not a universal performance fix. Removing cookies can sign you out of websites or change saved preferences. Choose the information to remove carefully.

6. Avoid unnecessary extras during installation

Get software from a trusted source and read the installation choices. Decline optional add-ons you do not need. Be wary of cleanup tools that promise dramatic improvements without explaining what they change.

7. Check whether a storage upgrade makes sense

If space remains tight, the computer may support a suitable larger drive. Compatibility and the work to move the operating system and files need checking. We can diagnose the situation and discuss upgrade options before parts are purchased.
