7 Tips to Improve Your Wi-Fi Connection
Check router placement, interference, coverage and your internet connection before spending money on Wi-Fi upgrades.
Weak coverage and a slow internet service can feel similar, but they are not the same problem. These seven tips can help you think through what needs attention before buying more equipment.
1. Review router placement
Place the router in an open, suitable position rather than hidden in a cupboard or behind large objects. Walls and building materials affect coverage. A central location can help, but the available connection point and the home’s layout also matter.
2. Check antenna guidance
If the router has adjustable external antennas, follow the manufacturer’s positioning advice. Not every model needs or supports antenna adjustment. Small changes may help in some layouts but are not a guaranteed solution.
3. Keep router software updated
Check the official app or administration page for supported updates. Some routers update automatically, while others require attention. Updates may address faults or security issues, but cannot overcome every coverage limitation.
4. Consider coverage equipment carefully
A suitable mesh system or extender may help reach parts of the home. Placement matters, because extra units still need a good connection to the rest of the network. Buying more units without checking the layout may not solve the problem.
5. Find out whether the router is the limitation
An older or unsupported router may be worth replacing, but investigate the cause first. Device limitations, the internet service or a fault can also affect speed. Check compatibility with your provider before choosing replacement equipment.
6. Look for interference and obstructions
Keep the router away from obvious obstacles and sources of interference where practical. Crowded wireless channels and neighbouring networks may also affect performance. We can assess the setup and discuss appropriate changes.
7. Separate Wi-Fi problems from plan limits
Compare what happens near the router and, where possible, through a wired connection. A faster internet plan will not repair weak Wi-Fi coverage. Consider a plan change only after checking whether the service speed is actually the limiting factor.
