7 Tips for Keeping Your Web Browser Secure
Keep your browser updated, review extensions, check website addresses and use built-in protection when browsing and downloading.
A browser is used for email, shopping, banking and much more. These seven habits can help you look after it without installing every security tool advertised online.
1. Keep the browser updated
Use a supported browser and allow its security updates to install. Restart it when an update requires that step. An old browser may not receive the same fixes as a current supported version.
2. Review extensions carefully
Install extensions only from a source you trust and consider the permissions requested. Remove extensions you no longer use. Adding more extensions does not automatically make browsing safer.
3. Use built-in browsing protection
Check that the browser’s phishing and dangerous-site warnings are enabled. Take warnings seriously rather than routinely bypassing them. These tools can help identify risks but do not recognise every scam.
4. Check the address as well as HTTPS
HTTPS protects the connection between the browser and website. It does not prove that the website operator is honest, and scam sites can also use it. Check the full address and verify unexpected requests independently.
5. Be cautious with downloads
Get software from its maker or an official app store where possible. Be careful with advertising buttons that resemble the download you want. Do not open an unexpected file just because it arrived from a familiar-looking sender.
6. Remove unnecessary browser software
Review old extensions, added toolbars and unexpected search changes. Do not install obsolete browser plugins to make an unfamiliar website work. Ask for advice if the browser keeps changing settings or displaying unwanted messages.
7. Secure your browser account
If you synchronise passwords, bookmarks or settings, protect the account with a strong sign-in and additional verification where available. Review which devices are connected. On a shared computer, take care about what is saved or synchronised.
