7 Tips for Cleaning Your Computer Hardware

Clean computer surfaces carefully, protect screens and ports, and recognise when dust or overheating needs professional attention.

Dust, spills and blocked vents can cause problems, but the wrong cleaning method can damage a computer too. These seven tips focus on careful routine care and knowing when to ask for help.

1. Switch off and disconnect first

Shut down the computer and disconnect its power supply and accessories before cleaning. Let it cool if it has been running. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the particular device.

2. Choose suitable cleaning tools

A soft, lint-free cloth is a useful starting point for external surfaces. Cleaning products, compressed air and brushes are not suitable for every component or model. Avoid household vacuum cleaners and do not open equipment unless you know how to work safely inside it.

3. Treat the screen gently

Start with the display maker’s cleaning instructions. Do not use vinegar, household cleaners or an abrasive cloth as a general screen-cleaning method. Never spray liquid directly onto the display, and take special care with coated or specialist glass.

4. Keep ventilation clear

Do not block cooling vents with fabric or clutter. If dust has built up internally or the computer is overheating, arrange suitable attention rather than forcing objects into openings. Internal fans and components can be damaged by careless cleaning.

5. Be careful around ports

Keep liquids and sharp objects away from connectors. If something is lodged in a port or the connector looks damaged, stop using it and ask for advice. Gentle external care is different from attempting a repair.

6. Keep the surrounding area tidy

A clean desk and clear floor space can reduce dust around the computer. Keep drinks where spills are less likely to reach equipment. Place the device on a suitable surface with room for airflow.

7. Review its condition regularly

How often cleaning is needed depends on the device and its environment. Watch for unusual noise, excessive heat or visible build-up rather than rely on one fixed interval. We can investigate cooling or hardware concerns and explain any work needed.
