7 Tips for Choosing the Right Antivirus Software

Compare antivirus compatibility, features, usability and independent testing without paying for extras you do not need.

Antivirus is one part of looking after a computer, alongside updates, backups and careful account use. These seven tips can help you compare protection without assuming the most expensive package is the best fit.

1. Consider how you use the computer

Think about the operating system, age of the device and the activities it is used for. Check the protection already installed before adding another product. Security needs are not determined simply by how many hours you spend online.

2. Compare free and paid features

A paid subscription may include extras such as support or additional tools. Those extras are useful only if they suit your needs. Compare the actual features and renewal terms rather than assume a paid product prevents every threat.

3. Check compatibility

Confirm that the product supports your operating system and hardware. Features may differ between Windows and Mac versions. Avoid installing conflicting real-time antivirus products together.

4. Look at what is included

Review malware protection, account features and any bundled VPN, backup or parental control tools. Check limits and whether you already have similar services. A long feature list is not automatically better value.

5. Choose something you can understand

Clear alerts and settings make protection easier to manage. Consider whether you can recognise when an update, scan or renewal is needed. Be wary of alarming upgrade messages that push you into buying extras without understanding them.

6. Read independent test results

Look at relevant results from established testing organisations such as AV-TEST or AV-Comparatives. Consider performance impact and false alarms as well as detection results. No test result guarantees that a product will stop every future attack.

7. Check device and subscription limits

If you need several devices covered, compare the supported platforms and number of licences. Check the renewal price and cancellation arrangements. Choose protection that fits the household rather than buying overlapping subscriptions.
